A Firm Foundation
Friday, April 25
Yesterday around noon the A-1 Builders crew had pumped out the water from the previous night’s rain, finished building the forms for new footers, and were ready to pour concrete.
We now have a solid foundation, reinforced with steel, to support the new studio floor, posts for the second floor, and the wall between reception and camera room.
A pumper truck made pretty quick work of bringing the concrete inside. Sure beats using buckets and wheelbarrows to move that heavy stuff.
That hose delivering concrete looked heavy, but made it possible to quickly distribute the slurry exactly where it needed to go. There was a beehive of activity for a few minutes because there’s a limited amount of time to work the concrete before it begins to set.
The final step in the concrete work was to finish the surface to make it smooth and level. Mike Gill, our project manager, told me he started in construction with concrete work.
This morning Mike told me the concrete had set to about 60% of its final strength, plenty to strip off the forms and move on to the next steps.
