Attend a Photo Class in 2012

I’m pleased to have been invited back to teach pocket camera photography classes again in 2012 at the Burke Museum, North Cascades Institute, and The Siskiyou Field Institute. I’ve also just added a new class at Whatcom Community College in Bellingham, too. Continue Reading »

Photography Classes Wrap Up

This was a great year for the photography classes I taught at several locations around Washington and Oregon. In March students in Salem, Oregon braved rain in the pocket camera class at Historic Deepwood Estate. In May we spent a day at the Burke Museum and University of Washington Medicinal Herb Garden. June found me teaching a 3-day digital SLR photography at the Siskiyou Field Institute near Selma, Oregon as well as leading a one-day field workshop at the Oregon Native Plant Society annual meeting southeast of John Day. I led a similar session outside Winthrop for the Washington Native Plant Society, then taught a 3-day pocket camera class for North Cascades Institute. Continue Reading »

2011 Photography Classes

I’m excited to be teaching wildflower or garden photography classes in several places in 2011. Some classes concentrate on using your digital SLR and others on getting the most from your pocket camera. If you’ve been in one of my classes before you know that I spend lots of time with each student, answering questions, suggesting ways to improve, and providing positive and thoughtful critiques. Tell your friends, and encourage them to sign up for one of my classes this coming year. Continue Reading »

2010 Garden Writers Annual Symposium

The annual feast of glorious gardens, fantastic friends, dynamic dancing, chatty coach rides, and enlightened discourse known as the Garden Writers Association Annual Symposium anticipates some Texas hospitality in Dallas September 10-14. I’ll be there, along with some 600 friends from across the continent who also write, photograph, or speak about gardens and gardening.

Digital Photography Classes

In mid-July I taught Pocket Camera Wildflower Photography for the North Cascades Institute at the NCI Environmental Learning Center on Diablo Lake. It’s a beautiful facility and I had a sold-out complement of fifteen students for the better part of three days. We started with the technical foundation of understanding camera settings and controls. Next I introduced aesthetic concepts, followed by a full-day field trip hike to Easy Pass where everyone practiced what they learned and I worked with each student individually to help them solve problems and improve their images. In the evening we projected favorites from each student and I critiqued their work in a positive and supportive way. On the third day we hiked and photographed on Sauk Mountain and I continued the one-on-one instruction. Continue Reading »

Pocket Camera Digital Photography Classes

I had a great group of students in my class at the WNPS Study Weekend May 23. We waited out the morning rain with an indoor discussion of dozens of technical details to help each person learn more about the capabilities of their camera and how to take best advantage of them. Then we headed out to a nearby trail and made photographs. I worked with each person individually to help them improve their composition and technique. It’s very satisfying to watch as someone tries something new and improves their photo skills. Feedback from my students was universally positive. Continue Reading »
