Old-growth Mountain Hemlock

Old-growth Mountain Hemlock

Mountain hemlock, Tsuga mertensiana, is usually found on cold, snowy subalpine sites where it grows slowly, sometimes attaining more than 800 years in age. This forest contains 800-year old trees at about 4,000 feet elevation and is part the new Canyon Lake Community Forest in Whatcom County, made possible by the efforts of the Whatcom Land Trust.
