Western Hemlock, [Tsuga heterophylla, is much more shade-tolerant than Douglas Fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii. Here, in the Elwha River valley in Olympic National Park, Hemlocks join Huckleberries in the shade of mature Douglas Firs.
