Pacific Madrone

Pacific Madrone

This broadleaf evergreen Pacific Northwest tree has beautiful bark, sometimes smooth and red like this tree, but more often peeling in interesting patterns. It prefers dry sites and in Washington is usually only found on rocky shores. Farther south Pacific Madrone, Arbutus menziesii, is a common tree in inland forests.
